Story
Hear the difference that UK charity Worth Unlimited has made for a young man named Stewart:
"Just over a year ago I couldn’t even get out of bed in the morning but now, through Worth Unlimited, I have completed an accredited social enterprise programme, helped set up a bike-based social enterprise, gained funding to support the start-up costs, given a presentation to 50 O2 staff, become a British cycling instructor, a bikeability instructor and a trained mechanic - and made a lot of good friends in the process."
Every year a sponsored bike ride is organised by Mary for Worth Unlimited, a charity working with young people in the UK to build hope, unlock potential and realise worth. Worth Unlimited enables marginalised young people to create opportunities for themselves; one way of doing this is by helping them learn new skills and set up social enterprises.
Last September we cycled the Coast to Coast, Whitehaven to Sunderland, in, shall we say, 'trying' conditions (there was some awesome mud action for those who wanted off-road fun; and we all climbed some impressive hills!). We raised £8,000 to support 'Gear Up' in Birmingham. Gear Up is a social enterprise all about bikes - building, repairing, training others to do the same...
So, this year we are doing it again, but as ever, it's a different route. We are cycling from Glastonbury to Bude; part of the West Country Way. A few years ago we went from Lands End to Bude. This is the next leg in that famous route (at this rate it will take us decades :-) ) although we're doing it in reverse to finish up by the sea.
