Unless we act now the beautiful city of Venice is likely to be uninhabitable within 50 years. What we can admire and enjoy will be lost to our children.

The problems of Venice are similar to my own: too old and too heavy!

Unlike Venice I am lucky enough to be able to change my foundations; well I can move about. In fact I have decided to move about quite a lot, 26.2 miles. On 23 October I am running the Venice Marathon in order to raise money for www.veniceinperil.org, a charity which is working to protect Venice in the long term, both as a monument and a living community.

Being too old and too heavy are real issues for me. At 16 stone and 49 years old I am far from the perfect physical form for completing the 50,000 paces required to finish a marathon. Sadly after weeks of training I am still 16 stone, which my legs remind me, every step!
