In 2010 'Songs of Praise' was on TV in the background, as I made Sunday lunch. I was moved by Calum's story.
Calum Speirs from Rothesay, Bute, was 12 when he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. In the 13 months that Calum lived, after his diagnosis, he arranged his own funeral service, laughed and smiled, and his priority was to think of others. He wanted other children to know the beauty of The Isle of Bute.
Days after hearing Calum's story, coincidentally, J and I visited Bute. During the stressful time of the strike at work, we had a 'staycation' just 'doon the watter' from Glasgow.
I agreed with Calum; Everyone should know the beauty that is The Island of Bute; its hills, beaches and people.
Calum's wish survives in Calum's Cabin, a holiday cottage, so that other children and their families, living and dying with cancer should know the glory, the peace and the joy of The Jewel of the Clyde.
Calum's Mum emailed me to say "Thank you. It's about making memories and recharging batteries."
ps. If you were just going to send a cheap card, or not even bother; just give a couple of quid. You can hide how much you give.
GET A GRIP AND GIVE A BIT!
