Story

Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page. Any donations will be hugely appreciated and will greatly benefit the community of Mulyezi.

This coming summer, EGP Malawi DAMRA (Max Johnson, Eleanor Hilton, Christy Ringrose, Luke Driscoll, Rebecca Maltby, Julia Dunn, Lynsey Chudleigh and Leonie von Hammerstein) will be working with the local community-based organisation DAMRA. Our individual project will help to build three school classrooms.

These will replace temporary mud and thatch predecessors that are currently close to collapse, thus providing a safe learning environment for children in standards three, four and five, and helping to generate interest in education in the local area. In addition, the District Commissioner for Mulyezi has committed to the appointment of two teachers upon completion of the classrooms, thus contributing to the long-term value and sustainability of the project. Through a Participatory Rural Appraisal, this project was selected as a priority by the Mulyezi community, volunteers from which will participate in the construction alongside skilled labourers and our team. The project will build on three previous years of EGP-DAMRA co-operation, including the building of school classrooms for standards one and two. Looking ahead, we hope this will lay the ground for more joint ventures, such as the proposed construction of three more classrooms, teachers’ accommodation, and irrigation, water and sanitation schemes.

As a group we are responsible for fundraising £11 000 to pay for the construction of the classrooms. All of this money goes towards the direct costs of the project, paying for the building materials and the labourers’ wages. None of the money raised will be spent on volunteers’ personal travel and living expenses.
