(Left to Right) David Beare, Steve Pearce & Robert Treadwell have completed the 2006 Marathon des Sables to raise money for the MS Society.
What is the Marathon des Sables?
The Marathon des Sables is a 150-mile self-sufficiency desert marathon run across the Sahara desert. All food, water and equipment is carried on our back for the duration of the race. It is commonly regarded as the most gruelling endurance race on earth!! This year’s event merely confirmed this tag.
Abnormally high humidity of 35% with temperatures still in excess of 45c led to huge problems with hydration. 200 people (roughly 27%) pulled out and there were over 100 IV drips administered. Blisters rapidly became the least of our problems. Having said this though, Rob will testify as to what it is to run for a week on blisters the size of your fist. He officially has no concept of a pain threshold!!
In the end we finished as follows:
Rob – 125th – 31hrs 55mins 5secs
Dave – 259th – 37hrs 54mins 29secs
Steve – 285th – 39hrs 14mins 26secs
The team came 17th overall.
To all those that have sponsored us to date and to those that sent us messages during the race, thank you. It was a massive boost to us to know that we had such great support behind us.
If you still want to donate to the MS society then our website is going to be open for a month or so. It is a really good cause and we’ve asked for the funds to be directed to a physiotherapy programme supported by the MS society. This way your generosity will directly benefit people that are suffer from MS on a daily basis.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Multiple Sclerosis Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. So please sponsor us now! Many thanks for your support.
