Story

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our page.  So why raise money for The Sharks Trust when there are so many worthy charities to choose from?  What started out as a bit of a morbid curiosity after reading the first few pages of ‘Jaws’ as a child, quickly turned into a fascination for these amazing creatures once I learned more about them.  When I started diving I could see for myself how rare they are and what there true nature is really like.  Although more people are beginning to realize that sharks do not deserve the reputation that they have been given in the past, because they are not cute and cuddly it is often more difficult to raise awareness and money for them.  As they are at the top of the food chain in the oceans they are particularly vulnerable as they do not reproduce quickly like those nearer the bottom of the food chain, this is bad news for the sharks as they cannot recover quickly when large amounts are killed due to fishing, by-catch or finning.

We’ll be doing an ocean snorkel swim from North Fanadir in the Red Sea near Hurghada back to the harbour at Emperor’s Dive Centre, at the Hilton Plaza Hotel; it’s nearly 5km long.  The idea to do this came about from a joke, Paul and Judy were always teasing me about my ‘extreme’ snorkeling and joked that I nearly reached the dive centre on one occasion.  This joke sounded like a good idea and a great challenge and it developed from there.  All I needed was some equally mad people to join me, which are Cat and Judy and here we are.  We will be doing our challenge on Tuesday 16 July.
