Scampering for SSNAP · 6 February 2019

In the UK, 1 in 10 babies need specialist care at birth. SSNAP supports sick & premature babies and their families in the Newborn Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Imagine your newborn baby needing specialist care at birth. Instead of those very special days getting to know your baby as a family, you’re catapulted into an unfamiliar world of incubators, wires, medical tests and interventions. While your baby has specialist treatment, we provide emotional and practical support to help you through the trauma & upheaval. We’re there to help families cope, and provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and nursing expertise that could save babies lives.

Story

Although you wouldn't believe it if you saw her now, In 2013 Ava was born extremely prematurely at just 25 weeks gestation weighing 850g, fitting into the palm of her Dad's hand. She spent the first 6 months battling for her life between the John Radcliffe and the Royal Berkshire Hospitals, only leaving either unit by ambulance transfer. It's thanks to their incredible care that she is thriving now.

After completing a short 1km run recently, Ava decided she'd like to try and raise money for the hospital in 'Oxbord' as she calls it, to help other babies like her. Her and her friends will be running/walking (and potentially being carried around by parents) at various events over the coming months to raise as much money as possible to give back to the unit. They'll be kicking off with the Witney 5km Rainbow Run in May.
