Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We hope you can support us as we attempt to ride 500km from London to Paris in aid of the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.

It is a sad reality that we all know someone touched by cancer. Whether it’s a parent, child, family member, friend or work colleague, tragically more than 290,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with a cancer each year and 1 in 3 people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. For us, it was Alan Pooley, who lost his brave battle against a deadly brain tumour in September last year.

Despite estimates of more than 42,000 people in the UK developing a primary or secondary brain tumour every year, brain tumours do not receive the profile or financial support of other cancers. Relatively little is known about this form of cancer or how to treat it effectively and as a result, most treatments focus on prolonging life rather than trying to cure it.

For this reason and in memory of Alan, the 5 of us have decided to take part in the annual London to Paris Bike Ride (www.londonparisbikeride.co.uk). The challenge consists of a gruelling 5-day 500km bike ride, starting from the UK's capital, through the English countryside over to rural France and on to the heart of Paris, finishing under the Eiffel Tower.

Our goal is to raise more than £10000 for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.  The Trust is the leading charity dedicated to brain tumour research, and patient information and support in the UK. The charity was registered by Samantha’s parents, Neil and Angela, in December 1996 following the death of Samantha just six days before her 17th birthday.

To help us achieve our goal we are looking for corporate and individual sponsorship and would be delighted if you can dig deep and support our team.  We need to raise 60% of the money before the 15th March in order to confirm our place on the ride and show commitment to the charity, so please donate now and support our ride in June.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
