Story
We had never heard of Mesothelioma..
That was until last year it was August 2011 when our Dad was diagnosed with it. It was caused from coming into contact with Asbestos when working in a factory when he was a young lad. He's now 61. He was given chemotherapy to give him a few months with us. He was then offered another round of chemotherapy which he had. Then was told there was nothing else, Couldn't have anymore chemotherapy as you have to have a break from it as it kills not only the bad cells but the good cells too. He asked his consultant about surgery.. but was told no. The risk is too high, thankfully dad asked for a 2nd opinion and was contacted by another surgeon in Leicester, who agreed to the operation. He is now going to be having the surgery next month.
5th March 2012 - Dad had his operation today, they removed the tumour from the lining of his lung, they also had to remove his Diaphragm out as that was infected. They put something to replace that and they also had to remove a bit of the lining around his heart as that was also infected, they also had to remove a rib as the tumour had got to that aswell.Everything went OK and he's now in Recovery. :-). His srugeon has told him it's expected he will live for another 18 months.
Its now May 2012 - Dad is still recovering from his major operation. He's doing well. He has oxygen for when he is struggling to breath and has a wheelchair so that he is able to get out of the house on occasions.
It can take between 10-50 years after being exposed to Asbestos for Mesothelioma to occur.
Most patients are unaware they have developed Mesothelioma as the symptoms typically resemble symptoms of less serious illness and occur so long after the initial exposure.
After researching Mesothelioma to get more information we decided to do a charity run to raise as much money as possible for the Mesothelioma Uk Charitable Trust. They are a national resource centre dedicated to providing specialist Mesothelioma information, support and improved care and treatment.
If you can donate any amount what-so-ever we would be very gratfeul. Every penny counts and will be going to a very worthy cause!
23rd June 2012 - We bag packed in Morissons an raised an amazing £300.00.
Thank You!
