My story
I was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in April 2011. I began with conventional treatment but have since largely shifted to complementary medicine. I believe patients need both options. That's why I support Yes To Life, which supports cancer patients across all approaches. I love to cycle and really believe exercise and diet have helped me beat the gloomy prognosis so far.
I'm joining The Ride (www.theride.org.uk) as it's raising awareness of diet and exercise in cancer treatment. I'll be cycling the length of Wales, starting in Holyhead at 1300 on 22nd July and ending in Cardiff on the 25th (with a rest day to escape the steepest climbs in Snowdonia!) Altogether I'm aiming to do about 170 miles.
Thanks for your generous support - every £ counts.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Update 8th July: the last month brought setbacks with a decline in health and a kidney infection. I couldn't even haul myslef on to the saddlle to cycle to the ed of the road. That coupled with awful weather has knocked my preparation but today I managed to do 20 miles (my first proper ride for a while) so I feel sure I can at least give it a real crack. Any miles I don't do, I will make up for at a later date in the Devon hills.

Well I did it ... or most of it. Managed 113 miles but will make up the missing miles later in Devon and post here when done. It was tough: strong winds, big hills but lovely scenery and great company. Full account: http://www.mikebakereducation.co.uk/beatingcancer/
Just 4 days to go. Preparation is slow as I'm so tired but I have bought some new waterproofs - that should guarantee some sunshine. Thanks to everyone for getting me so close to my fund-raising target. Driving to North Wales Saturday for Sunday start in Holyhead.
July 15th: 1 week to go and today I managed 27 miles in Devon. Stamina is now building slowly, albeit a bit late. But I know now I will certainly start the ride ...and see how it goes. Thanks for all the donations. £5k target in sight.
8th July: I've suffered setbacks with poor health/kidney infection & couldn't even cycle to the end of the road. That knocked my preparation but today I managed 20 miles (1st proper ride for a while) so feel able to give it a real go. Any miles I don't do, I'll do later.
The fund raising is going fantastically - thank you everyone. I can't quite say the same about my training - only managed just over 100 miles so far this month. But I am determined to do it.
