Eight years ago our Grandad Jim died suddenly and unexpectly leaving Nan alone. She coped amazingly at first, and was a rock to us, our sister and cousins. However in spite of the support of our whole family, lonliness and old age crept in and she began to develop Dementia. The process was slow and painful to watch for teenagers such as ourselves. In spite of her confusion, her smile was still beautiful and could light up any room. Unfortunately the decline in Nan's mental health began to be matched by a decline in her physical strength, as she gradually lost the ability to speak and eat and drink independently. In October 2012, the day after she attended Mike's surprise 21st birthday party, Nan suffered a fall and was subsequently taken to hospital. She battled on, both there and in high priority care homes, until early 2012 when unfortunatley due to another fall, her body coulnd't fight any longer. She was a great and loving lady in health and in sickness, and so we're running this marathon for you Nanny Pat, hoping that the money raised will fund more research to ease the suffering of others in similar sitautions!

 

BRACE is a charity that specialises in Alheimer's research. It works to understand the causes, improve diagnosis and ultimately help the treatment of Dementia so that science can beat it! This is a valuable field of study and as the life expentancy of people increases, this becomes ever more applicable to more and more people.
