Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Ithought I may raise £600.00 if I was lucky but as you can see I've nearly doubled it and am being a bit cheeky now trying to raise it to £1500.00

I completed the walk in 5 days in May and found it an amazing experience. There were many highlights, apart from the fantastic generosity of people.  For example, arriving at Ryde by ferry and being met by a representative of Wight Walks who had booked my B & B accommodation and transported my luggage from place to place. And then getting started at 11.30 and thinking this is it then next stop Cowes!

Day 2 was to Yarmouth and I particulary remember the line of 21 miniature canons on the seaward side of the Royal Yacht Squadron ready for a miniature royal salute.  Very taken by Yarmouth itself which has a lovely setting giving attractive views in all directions.

Day 3 was a super walk all day. The steady climb up to the Tennyson monument was superb and then along the coast to Freshwater approached through a field with lots of cows and calves! The shingle here is a lovely grey colour. Another surprising phenomenon is the point (Compton Chine) where the cliffs change from being chalky to a sandy colour.

Day 4 nice with the weather holding dry and quite sunny but strongish wind which was partly behind me so helped me along. Blackgang is a steep climb and quite impressive. Steephill Cove looked very pretty but it involved a bit of a detour and so I just looked at it from above! Then a pretty part round Bonchurch, but the last section to Shanklin was quite undulating and difficult underfoot which at the end of the day made it tiring.

Day 5 started off damp but the rain stopped as soon as I got going! The path took me through Sandown and then steeply up Culver Down to the Yarborough monument.  This is the tallest monument on the Isle of Wight and commemorates Lord Yarborough who was the prime mover in founding the Royal Yacht Squadron in the mid-1800's. Via Bembridge, the Bembridge Duver and Seaview and then the heavens opened and I had to walk into the rain which was accompanied by a strong NW wind.  So a challenging end to the walk but I felt very pleased to have completed it on time!
