Imagine. Stop for a moment and imagine wanting to do something and not being able to because your muscles do not receive proper instructions from your brain. The something you want to do is to walk or lift a drink to your mouth or speak or type. The London Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy aims to help children to achieve such aims. It runs a school for children up to the age of 11 suffering from cerebral palsy.
I have helped raise money for the Centre for the past 15 years as a member of Hornsey Round Table, mostly by dressing up as Father Christmas in Muswell Hill or a Dickensian character in Highgate pubs and collecting money from the public.
For the last few years the centre has raised a lot of money by organising charity cycle rides but I have been unable to take part because of family commitments. I am delighted to be able to take part this year and hope to ride from the Centre in Muswell Hill to Harwich, where I will meet up with the rest of the team, then sail from Harwich to Hoek van Holland and follow a circuitous route in Holland to Amsterdam. The total journey will be about 260 miles which I hope to complete in four days. So, should I indulge my passion for dressing up and don my full lycra 'mark cavendish' outfit? No, I don't think so, it would scare the children!
