Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Mid life crisis or what! I just decided to try something different this year and also raise money for a worthwhile cause. A couple of years ago my daughter was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. When she first became ill we just thought it was a normal 'bug'. However after 6 months of illness, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, listlessness, trips to doctors and hospitals she was finally diagnosed with Coeliac disease. Of course I didn't have a clue what this meant. Here is a definition from http://www.coeliac.org.uk/coeliac-disease :

Coeliac disease (pronounced see-liac) is not an allergy or simple food intolerance. In fact it's an autoimmune disease, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues.

In people with coeliac disease this immune reaction is triggered by gluten, a collective name for a type of protein found in the cereals wheat, rye and barley. A few people are also sensitive to oats.

Awareness of Coeliac disease is improving as is diagnosis, but there is a long way to go. Here are some of the issues Molly faces:

needing to check all food (e.g. some brands of crunchy nut corn flakes are OK, but other brands are not) - food labelling still has a long way to go.

not being able to eat the same food when going to parties

remembering to use different margerine/butter to avoid cross contamination (same with knives, pans etc.)

being served in a restaurant with boiled potatoes and fried egg, because that was all they could do that was gluten free (haven't been back)

spending a night in the toilet vomiting, missing a week of school after a restaurant assured us their chips were gluten free!

So help me to raise awareness and give me some motivation for training!
