Great North Run 2016 · 11 September 2016 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving Page!

I want to do something to help make a difference to people and families affected by dementia and have made the crazy decision to participate in this year's Great North Run, even though I can't actually run!  I am joining up with 30 other people from HSBC bank to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society.

This is a cause which is very close to my heart and I want to do something I've never done before in memory of a few lovely people who have either sadly passed away or who are currently living with this debilitating condition.  My grandma, Ivy Hughes changed overnight from a larger than life chatterbox, who would read 7 or 8 books every week to someone who was extremely frightened and upset.  She was affected by paranoid dementia and this awful condition robs people of the person they once were.   I would also like to mention my Auntie Maisie, Phillip Smith and my sister-in-law Linda, who have all suffered or are suffering with this terrible disease .

All monies raised will fund important research, support the families of people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and most importantly, support those who have it. We have an opportunity to make a real difference to people who tell us that due to this disease, they feel lonely, frightened and not part of their community. The team's contribution will mean that 850,000 people affected by dementia in the UK, get the support that they deserve and an opportunity to continue living well.

Any donation you can make, however small, is so very much appreciated.  Thank you :)
