At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

On September 1st, the Clipper 13-14 Round the World Race will leave St Katherines Dock, Tower Bridge to comment it's 40,000 miles race around the world. We'll be visiting six continents with 15 stopovers during the eleven-month challenge. I will be part of the 600 crew taking on this challenge.

The hard work begins now, not only do I need to fund this amazing challenge of a lifetime, but I am also raising money for a charity very close to my heart.

Alzheimer’s Society: Leading the fight against dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting around 465,000 people in the UK. It is a progressive disease which means that gradually, over time, more parts of the brain are damaged. As this happens, the symptoms become more severe, (symptoms include loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning).

Sadly my grandfather was diagnosed a a very young age, the knowledge/advice of this disease was extremely limited at the time. We watched him slowly drift away from us, not recognising his wife, daughter and grand children was the most heart breaking feeling of all.

So far, no one single factor has been identified as a cause for Alzheimer’s disease. It is likely that a combination of factors, including age, genetic inheritance, environmental factors, lifestyle and overall general health, are responsible.  There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, simply drugs to temporarily alleviate some symptoms or slow down their progression in some people.

My aim is to raise the profile of dementia and raise funds for research so that others don’t have to watch their loved one’s slip away into a shell of the person they once were.

Each month I am commiting a large proportion of my salary to this project. I’m under no illusion that this is going to be tough and the sacrifices I’ll make over the coming months is now sinking in, I’m going to embrace this opportunity and do all I can to sail as far as I can around the world.

Over the coming months, my story will feature in press, events will be held and I'll be asking friends and family, plus their friends and family to spread the word and help me do all I can for this great cause.
