Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
On September 11th I am running in the Adidas 5K Women's Challenge to help raise money for the Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK.
Rett Syndrome is a debilitating neurological disorder which most often strikes previously healthy little girls just after they have learned to walk and say a few words. It then begins to drag their development backwards.
As symptoms progress these little girls lose acquired skills, normal movement and speech. They are often left unable to communicate or use their hands to hold, carry or manipulate objects.
Over time, girls who have learned to walk often lose that ability too. Loss of motor control sets in, essentially locking them into bodies that won't work, leaving them without the ability to make purposeful movements.
There is currently no cure for Rett Syndrome... but there is hope. Researchers have successfully reversed Rett Syndrome in the lab and scientists across the world believe that Rett Syndrome could be the first reversible neurological disorder.
My friend's niece Francesca was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in 2008, at the age of three. So trying to help raise money for treatments is important to me.
The Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK has only one focus: research. The organisation is driven by families whose only interest is in accelerating treatments and finding a cure.
