Story
Towards the end of January this year, Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary received a call from a greyhound breeder who had a young pup diagnosed with total blindness. As you can imagine this is not something which would be generally tolerated within the racing community. The price of treatment and surgery outweighed his racing potential as his sight would never be perfect. Although we have a waiting list and a residency beyond our capacity, the prospects for his future and his unique circumstances lead to his arrival.
At five months, he is a big boy! We gave him his name – ‘Harvey’ (Greyhound breeders do not name their charges) and it suited him down to the ground. It took ‘Harvey’ a matter of minutes to formulate a mental map of the Sanctuary reception and office area as he has astutely attuned senses. His hearing and sense of smell give him a skilful perception of his whereabouts, something beyond our human understanding.
Thankfully, we came across a generous and gifted Veterinary Eye Surgeon and specialist who has offered to carry out a treatment with an 85% success ratio. Although her time, attention and efforts are in goodwill, the treatment itself is costly. This will give Harvey a second chance, a future and the ability to see a world he can only sense. We adamantly maintain, this clever, handsome, playful pup deserves every chance that we can strive to offer him for a better life. As a Sanctuary, we are committed to care. Please see his condition as something we can change together and help support his Sight Fund. Every single penny counts towards Harvey's happiness! Thank you all for your continued support!
