Team Apollo Country Mile Challenge · 27 September 2009

We are an international horse charity that strives to improve the lives of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in the UK and throughout the world. We support the horse-human partnership in all its guises, using care, research, education and influence.

Story

In January 2008, World Horse Welfare was involved in the RSPCA investigation where more than 100 horses, ponies, foals or donkeys were found to have been neglected on a farm in Amersham, Bucks.  Sadly, a number of horses had already died in these horrendous conditions.  We, as horse lovers, were sickened by the story as it unfolded - a feeling reflected by many non-horsey people across this animal-loving country of ours.

Following a rescue operation, 11 of the surviving horses went to Hall Farm, WHW’s Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre in Norfolk.  They needed immediate treatment for a number of ailments, including overgrown feet and respiratory infections.  The total cost for this treatment so far has been over £112,000.

This means that £112,000 is unavailable to be spent elsewhere because of this single, appalling incident.  Whilst Middleton Equestrian Centre is proudly campaigning for ‘Saddle Up – Stand and be Counted’ for Spinal Research this year, we still felt that this (hopefully) one-off atrocity deserved a response.

Team Apollo Country Mile Challenge

·   A points-based accumulator jump around the Middleton Equestrian Centre’s Boundary track

·   A choice of routes – ShowJump fences, Cross Country fences, or both!

·   Each fence attempted will earn the rider points

·   Bonus points available for total time taken to ride the course, and for our special ‘bonus fence’

·   All sponsorship should be based on the amount of points gained by the rider

·   Maximum 2 runs per rider/horse combination (if using an MEC horse, this is subject to availability)

For non-riders, why not ask your friends and family for sponsorship for Kerry (MEC’s very own ‘boss’ and Team Apollo event rider) on her new and quite wobbly stallion or for Lewis (Team Apollo’s Dressage-‘only’ expert) ‘hoofing it’ around on one of our school ponies?
