My story
We are delighted to announce that we will be supporting two fantastic causes, the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and the Brecon Beacons National Park Erosion Fund.
In the many years we have been training, competing and organising events in the local area we have been fortunate enough to never have to call on the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, but have on occasions witness the life saving services they provide. Whilst we may not have had to call on them in the past, knowing they are there offers great assurance.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team is an emergency service staffed entirely by volunteers and funded by donation. They operate principally in mid Wales, working from the Brecon Beacons National Park north to Plynlimon, from the Welsh borderland westward, through mid Wales, to the Ceredigion coast. Their work is not restricted to mountain and wilderness search and rescue for climbers and hill walkers: skills are also deployed by the police to search for vulnerable or missing persons in the community where we can employ our specialist medical and rescue techniques.
The team can be (and is) called out at any time of day or night, under any conditions, even on New Year’s Day and Christmas Day as happened in 2000. 2010 is likely to be a record year for call outs with 59 recorded to date, details of which can be found below, the list is an interesting insight in to the breath of services and support the team provide. Reading the brief descriptions it’s easy to imagine the relief individuals must have felt when the team were able to reach them.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team Website
Given the nature of the events we organise, it is fitting we support the team in the fantastic work they do. For every entry we receive for Rounds 1 & 3 of The Welsh One Day Ultra Series (30 miles, The Black Mountains & 50 miles, The Wye Valley) we will donate £1 to the team.
The Brecon Beacons National Park Erosion Fund has been set up to do ‘what it says on the tin’, the National Park is a beautiful place and we feel very lucky to be able to live, train and compete in this beautiful outdoor playground. The National Park Authority have a difficult balancing act, attracting visitors to enjoy the delights of the National Park whilst maintaining the stunning environment. For our part we will avoid using the areas which suffer most from foot fall erosion for our event and will be donating £1 to the fund for every confirmed entry in to Round 2 of The Welsh One Day Ultra Series (40 miles, The Brecon Beacons).
More information on the work the National Park Authority undertake can be found on their website.
