Inspired by receiving the trophy for 'promoting the Minor', a.k.a. the
'Chief Halfwit Award', at last year's MMOC AGM, I decided to up the
stakes this year and try a new folly, and eventually decided to
establish some sort of record for the largest number of events attended
in a single year. The magical number is fifty, an average of just one
event per week but a little more tricky when you factor in the short
rally 'season'. I aim to hit fifty before this year's AGM, and to do
that I am at a different venue every Saturday and Sunday (plus others
on Bank Holiday Monday's and on weekday evening's) from the beginning
of March right through to the end of October.
The range for
this challenge covers both the East and West Coasts, up north as far as
Barnard Castle and south as far as London, plus the Minors On Tour trip
to the French Alps region at the beginning of June. I'm about a fifth
of the way through now in the first week of May, and already suffering
allergic reactions to driving to the middle of nowhere and parking in a
field.
In the process, I'm hoping to raise some money for
Leuka, who supported MMOC veteran Ian Portsmouth in his fight against
leukeamia which he finally lost late last year. Hopefully you'll be
aware of the sterling efforts Dave Portwood is putting into raising
money for the same cause, with his marathon cycle ride to the Minors On
Tour campsite this year - you can read more on his enterprise at
http://www.justgiving.com/dave-portwood. My challenge is far less
strenuous than Dave's but will take me a little longer to complete! I'm
keeping a 'diary' of events done so far, at
http://www.niftyfifty.org.uk/, and there is a calendar there of future
events too so you can come and join me somewhere along the way if
you're able.
