Mary’s Meals is a global movement that sets up school feeding programmes in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. The charity now feeds more than three million children every school day and it costs just £19.15/€22.00 to feed a child for a year.

Story

If you had said to me 6 months ago that I would be entering a 100 mile bike ride, I would have thought you were nuts! However, as I am slightly nuts, that's exactly what I'm doing.

In 2007 Aileen and I went with a TearFund group to Malawi. In Blantyre we visited a school with 3000 kids. Aileen trained me up to do part of the eye screening process and she did the detailed tests. I was shocked by the number of eye conditions that were caused by poor diets and lack of vitamins.

The school had a project called Mary's Meals where school kids received a vital start to the day with a bowl of porridge. Families wouldn't have enough money to give their kids breakfast so they would often go to school hungry.

The Scottish charity Mary's Meals first began school feeding in 2002 and now they provide daily meals to 450,000 children, many who are orphans. To find out more read here: http://www.marysmeals.org.uk/a-global-campaign/malawi/

It only costs around £10 to feed a child for a whole year!
