Story
I’m really excited to tell you that in September I will be
travelling to Tanzania to volunteer for the charity ‘Raleigh International. I will be taking part in a four month International Citizen Service placement as a project Team Leader, in charge of a team of volunteers as part of Raleigh's international development programme.
Raleigh International is a partner of ICS which aims to inspire
young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are
passionate about long term community development.
Raleigh works with communities that have specifically requested their help, to create positive and lasting change in some of the world's poorest communities.
In Tanzania, approximately 75% of Tanzanians live without adequate access to safe water and sanitation, and very few economic opportunities exist for young people.
During my time in Tanzania, I'll be living and working with the local community, where development projects will include assisting with building and maintaining safe water supplies and sanitation points, and supporting young people to set up local businesses and livelihoods.
This will be in a once in a life time experience which I hope will be both challenging and hugely rewarding. I will be spending the duration of the project living with a host family, so I will be fully immersed in the experience!
I’m expecting it to be extremely challenging but I can’t wait to experience life in a completely different part of the world and to help a charity to positively change the lives of people in the developing world.
The first part of my placement is a challenge to raise £800 towards the work of Raleigh ICS, by September. Raleigh is a not-for-profit sustainable development charity, supported by the government's Department for International Development. This means that all money raised will go towards enabling the programme; ensuring Raleigh continues sending youth volunteers to the developing world to make a lasting difference in disadvantaged
communities.
Thank you everyone for your support,
Mikey.
