Story

Thanks you for visiting my JustGiving page.

I'm taking part in the Alzheimer's Society - Inca trail challenge on 8th May 2010 with friends Teresa and Kathleen to raise money for Alzheimer's Society and I'd really appreciate your support.  As many of you may know, my partner Darren's mother Vera has been diagnosed with Alzheimers.

For those who have never met my 'mother in law', she was always very glamorous looking far younger than her 71 years.  Over the past 2 years we have seen her change from being slightly forgetful, to becoming very confused, prone to mood changes, and unable to function fully without constant supervision.  She is now unable to look after herself, and believes that Darren is her husband not her son.

This is particularly distressing for Darren as since setting up this page Darren's father Eric died suddenly. Darren as their only son has taken responsibility for the care of his mum, which now means that she is in a home as she needs 24 hour care as she is unable to do the basics of caring for herself without assistance.  Eric was a very special man, and only now do we realise how difficult his life was as a full time carer.  He is missed very much by us and his many friends.  The photo above shows Eric and Vera in happier times just a short time ago.

1 in 3 people will end up with some form of dementia - so together let's try and raise money to prevent this from being our future.

No amount is too large or too small.

Thank you for your kindness
