Fat & Knackered - How hard can 100 miles on a bike be? · 6 June 2010

We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm 53, I weigh 18 stones, I've had one knee replaced and the other one is pretty knackered too, so just how hard can it be to ride a bike 100 miles to raise money for Cancer Research?

Having bought a bike last year, I was inspired to do something for charity by my cousin Ian who raised several thousand pounds for Cancer Research by losing a lot of weight. Ian did this in support of his brother (also my cousin, obviously!) Stuart who came home from serving in Afghanistan with a particularly aggressive and rare cancer.

Stuart is making a remarkable recovery after major surgery last year and has recently done a parachute jump to raise money for Help for Heroes (if you want to help Stuart's fundraising, he is on Justgiving - search for Stuart Unsworth). How Stuart has dealt with cancer is a great inspiration.

I decided last year to ride a 100 mile cycle sportive event as a personal challenge to raise money for Cancer Research - not just in support of Stuart, but also in memory of my mother, grandmother and aunt who all suffered from cancer.

With 2 weeks to go before the event, where I'll be joining an awful lot of other people in Norwich (and trying to race them in a friendly manner), I really have no idea if I will last the 100 miles! I have ridden 73 miles, which hurt, so I will need some inspiration along with the perspiration to complete the course.

This is where you come in - please, please dig deep and sponsor me and help inspire me with your donation to such a worthy cause!

No matter how much you can afford to donate, it will help in the fight against cancer.

Thank you so much,

Mike

Update - I manged to complete the 100 miles in just over 6 hours riding time! Thank you for all your kind donations and messages of support and encouragement - they meant a lot to me.

Thanks,

Mike
