<p>In September, I'm participating with some friends in the Great River Race 2011.</p>
<p>We sailed with theTall Ships Youth Trust earlier this year. Our journey on the tall ship Stavros S Niarchos took us 14 days and over 1600 miles across the Atlantic from the Azores to Southampton. It was a great experience starting out as a collection of strangers, individuals from very different walks of life, we, under the guidance of the permanent crew quite literally 'learned the ropes' and arrived in Southampton as a crew and a group of friends. This voyage was one that Tall Ships do to raise extra money from fare paying 'volunteers', but their main aim is to take people aged 12 to 25 on subsidised sailing trips, giving them an amazing opportunity to learn the importance and necessity of working as a team, looking out for each other, boosting self-confidence, developing social skills and broadening their horizons.</p>
<p>As a group of adults we all took a lot from our adventure, and have foolishly decided to embark on this 21 mile slog to raise money for Tall Ships.</p>
<p>The Great River Race is pretty simple in principle - 21 miles along the Thames (upstream) in a rowing boat built for 10. It's going to be pretty unpleasant though, so please dig deep and make it worthwhile.</p>
