Tall Ships Youth Trust is the UK’s oldest and largest youth development sail training charity. With a focus on helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, our mission is to enable them to fulfil their life potential through experiences at sea and by breaking down the barriers they face.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In September, I'm participating with some friends in the Great River Race 2011.

We sailed with theTall Ships Youth Trust earlier this year. Our journey on the tall ship Stavros S Niarchos took us 14 days and over 1600 miles across the Atlantic from the Azores to Southampton. It was a great experience starting out as a collection of strangers, individuals from very different walks of life, we, under the guidance of the permanent crew quite literally 'learned the ropes' and arrived in Southampton as a crew and a group of friends. This voyage was one that Tall Ships do to raise extra money from fare paying 'volunteers', but their main aim is to take people aged 12 to 25 on subsidised sailing trips, giving them an amazing opportunity to learn the importance and necessity of working as a team, looking out for each other, boosting self-confidence, developing social skills and broadening their horizons.

As a group of adults we all took a lot from our adventure, and have foolishly decided to embark on this 21 mile slog to raise money for Tall Ships.

The Great River Race is pretty simple in principle - 21 miles along the Thames (upstream) in a rowing boat built for 10. It's going to be pretty unpleasant though, so please dig deep and make it worthwhile.

http://www.tallships.org/

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
