Paris Marathon 2012 · 15 April 2012 ·

We are the official charity of NHS Lothian, supporting all its work, all its staff and all the patients and families it cares for. From the everyday to the transformational, from birth to end of life care, we’re here to help everyone give something back to move health forward.

Story

Mike and Stu Richmond are running the Paris Marathon in memory of their cousin Fi who sadly passed away in November 2011 after a long battle with cancer.

Fi first noticed a loss of strength in one of her legs in Spring 2010 as she was studying for her A-Levels. After 6 months of uncertainty and a number of tests, a glioblastoma (a cancerous growth) in the spinal cord was finally diagnosed in January 2011. Fi then undertook six weeks of radiotherapy followed by various courses of chemotherapy. She was never one to shy away from a challenge and she fought the cancer with amazing determination throughout her illness. Sadly, however, none of the treatments could stop the tumour spreading up her spinal cord and into her brain, and Fi passed away in November 2011 at home, surrounded by her family.

Fi was only 19 when she died but no-one can say she didn't get the most out of those 19 years. She was fun, gorgeous, strong-willed (read bossy), intelligent, kind and thoughtful. She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her as a great friend and a great character.

As mentioned, in her illness, as in her life, Fi wasn't one to give in easily and in memory of her we have decided to run the Paris marathon, hopefully together (brotherly competitiveness aside!), to raise money for the Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-Oncology (ECNO), which is doing research into brain tumours at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre. The hope is that, in time, the research will lead to a faster and more effective treatment for this particularly serious type of cancer. As well as its research programme, ECNO provides a first-class neuro-oncology service to patients, families and their carers.

ECNO will receive funds directly from the Lothian Health Board Endowment Fund, which is the charity through which donations are to be made.

If you would like to make a donation by cheque or otherwise than directly through JustGiving, please feel to contact Mike on mike.richmond@ashurst.com.

Thank you.
