MY STORY:
At Camden School for Girls we were asked to think of fundraising ideas. The school motto is 'Onwards and Upwards' so this amazing endurance challenge fits that perfectly. A comprehensive state school in North London, CSG does not have a swimming pool, nor a swimming team. Despite this, thanks to its founder Francis Mary Buss it was the first girls school in Britain to include sport as part of its core curriculum.
Fellow Y8 student Lily Ouldcott and I decided that swimming the English Channel was a worthwhile challenge (not too sure now!) and we set about getting this organised. We asked Lily's Dad (he swam the channel last year) to coach us, secured a pilot boat, pursuaded the school to get behind this and cajoled some other Y8 girls to join the adventure.
We have been cold water training in the Serpentine most weekends, endurance swimming in pools during the week and have been training at Dover Harbour since 9th June. The sea is cold, dirty and sometimes very rough, we have been stung by jellyfish (freaky!) often end up in tears because we are so cold and tired but we go back and do it all again the next weekend.
UPDATE: "We have all qualified by doing a 2 hour swim at Dover Harbour in 16C or less, surviving the cold, jellyfish stings and exhaustion but we've done it! The swim is scheduled for August 27th and we have a 4 day window - the weather and sea conditions will determine the exact date."
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Camden School. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the school.
So please dig deep and donate now. Thank you!
