Story

My name is Millie Kidd and I am 7 years old, nearly 8!

When I was 5 years old I had to visit Dr Khan my GP from Clarendon Medical Centre in Hyde because I had a rash all over my body.  During a routine check Dr Khan found that I had a heart murmur.  Dr Khan referred me to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and after undergoing tests and scans I was diagnosed with a heart defect.  Half of my lung drains which bring blood back to my heart were draining to the wrong side of my heart causing it to strain and not enough oxygen was being sent around my body.  I was born like this but nobody knew as I didn’t show any obvious symptoms.  After weeks of being monitored my condition deteriorated and I was given a date for my operation.  I had to go to the Cardiac Surgery Department at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool for my heart operation.  I was very nervous when I arrived but after meeting my surgeon I was a lot happier, he is a very nice man who likes strawberry yogurt like me!

My operation took 8 hours and when it was done I spent 24 hours on the Intensive Care Unit.  I don't remember much about this bit as I was very sleepy all the time but mum and dad told me this was because of the medicine.

For the next 5 days the very kind nurses on ward K2 looked after me until I was well enough to go home.  I was off school for 6 weeks and I missed my teacher and friends but they sent me a nice card to let me know they were thinking about me.

I am a very lucky girl to have a doctor like Dr Khan.  He says he was just doing his job but if it wasn’t for him we would not have known about my heart being poorly and it would have just stopped working one day without any warning.

The reason I am taking part in the Manchester to Liverpool bike ride is to raise money to donate to the Alder Hey Children’s charity.  This is my way of saying thank you to everybody from the Cardiac Surgery team for making me better and also to help make other poorly children better too.
