Walk for ME · 10 May 2015

ME Research UK exists solely to fund high quality biomedical studies into the causes and treatment of ME/CFS. This illness affects approximately 250,000 people in the UK but is neither well understood nor, in many cases, properly recognised. We fund highly regarded, peer-reviewed research worldwide.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have suffered from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or commonly known as Chronic fatigue syndrome since 2005. As M.E./C.F.S. is a fluctuating illness, symptoms vary day-to-day. I have had a few good years where I was able to maintain a fairly normal life but since the end of 2013 my symptoms got progressively worse again so much so that I can't work full time or manage simple things like housework, shopping or driving far . Those who know me will understand how much the latter annoys me. I used to really like walking & in my better years could easily do 2 or 3 miles a day & long to be able to do that again but right now I am aiming for a 20 min walk along to my local park. This will be my sponsored walk.

It is thought that around 250,000 men, women and children in the UK have M.E., although it is most common in women aged 25-50.

There is a strong possibility that someone you know is affected by the illness.

M.E. is defined as a neurological illness by the World Health Organisation. NHS guidelines say the symptoms can be as disabling as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or congestive heart failure.

However, levels of severity vary from mild and functioning to housebound or bedbound.

The more money that is raised means more can be spent on research to try & find a cause & more importantly CURE for this debilitating & down right awful illness.
