Liz and I are involved with a charity called ‘International Needs’ which tries to help people in the developing world become self sufficient. One of the ways they do this is to arrange for ‘us’ to buy farm animals for people in Africa.  The African farmers are checked to make sure they have the facilities to care for the animals and then they are given a cow, pig or goat or for the very poorest, chickens and they are asked to return the first born animal to the charity to be passed on to the next family. So eventually it is hoped that this scheme will become self-sufficient.
