My story
Well in true milkman style I reached the summit of 6000 metres at 8am on Thursday, 21 June and delivered his nicely chilled (-30C!) pint of milk to the foot of the much photographed summit signpost.
It was without doubt the most difficult and challenging thing I have ever done but also the most rewarding. The challenge involved 8 days of trekking in temperatures of 30C and camping in temperatures of –10C. On summit night we were woken at midnight after only a couple of hours sleep in order to reach the summit by daybreak. I would like to be able to say that I reached the summit easily but in truth I only just made it to the top and promptly had to descend rather quickly (time for a few quick photos only) due to suffering from the effects of the altitude (nosebleeds, high blood pressure, headaches, sickness and shortness of breath to name a few!). It was the thought of all the kind people who have donated, all the people who have sent their best wishes and the support of the trekking group that gave me the final push to get to the top. So I would like to thank everyone (customers, suppliers, friends and family) who have generously sponsored me in this challenge and sent kind encouraging words. I am really pleased to report that the total raised for St. Nicholas Hospice Care currently stands at £6,500 which is a fantastic amount!
Thankyou
Roger
My updates 4
Today is departure day and Roger is on his way to Tanzania estimated arrival in Kilimanjaro is lunchtime tomorrow (Thursday, 14th)............the challenge proper commences on Friday...
Feel comfortable with the amount of 'walking' training I've done but am a little concerned about how I will react to the altitude. So over the final 3 weeks am going to focus more on cardio training to increase my lung capacity as much as possible.
3 weeks to go and have just completed a thorough training weekend in the Lakes (courtesy of Steve & Emma) which also doubled-up as an anniversary weekend away with Sam.....don't think she minded ;) Survived an 11 hour walk taking in Scafell Pike with only slight injury.
Wow! Cannot believe how generous people have been! I have smashed my target with still 5 weeks to go to the challenge. Thanks everyone for your kind support so far.........
