Story
Marion was diagnosed with Mesothelioma in October 2014, an asbestos related cancer which is terminal and there is no known treatment.
Over the years she worked selflessly within her community in many ways including:- a parent governor at a school, a magistrate for over 20 years, she helped to start a youth club, assisted with raising funds for Scout Groups, Lions International and she was secretary for a local charity branch.
Despite having to cut back on her voluntary work, Marion, together with her daughter Mandy, set out raising funds and awareness for asbestos related cancer charities. One of the fundraising project was a Charity Ball arranged for Saturday 31 January, however sadly Marion died peacefully that morning at Severn Hospice and whilst it was an emotional evening, the ball went ahead in a celebration of her life. Together with other fundraising activities it has to date raised over £6.5K which will go to charities that supported Marion and will no doubt help many others in the future.
Mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos and the outlook for anyone with the condition is poor, because it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. Unfortunately, most people diagnosed with mesothelioma will die within three years of being diagnosed, and the average person survives for around 12 months. Every year in the UK, there are around 2,300 deaths from the condition. Asbestos is likely to be present in any building constructed or refurbished in the UK before the year 2000. An estimated half a million buildings contain it. It was only in the late 1990's that the government decided, with no exceptions to ban the use of asbestos. Marion has never smoked or knowingly worked with asbestos, she died on 31/1/2015 after being diagnosed in October 2014
She was determined to make a difference. Please help her continue to achieve this aim!
