Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.
On Sunday 8th July 2012, I will be participating in the British 10 K London run to raise fund for Special Olympics Great Britain.
Special Olympics Great Britain is proud to be the country’s largest provider of year-round sports training and competition programmes for children and adults with learning disabilities.
Special Olympics Great Britain is a recognised member of the Olympic family with a unique role to play. The Paralympics provides sports competitions for elite level disabled athletes with physical and sensory disabilities, including learning disabilities, while Special Olympics fosters community sport year-round at all levels for those with learning disabilities.
Since the formation in 1978 as part of the global Special Olympics Movement, Special Olympics Great Britain has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of people through sport. There are currently 135 Special Olympics clubs in Great Britain, run by over 2,800 volunteers and involving 8,000 athletes who benefit from our sports programme.
Only with your support can we continue to offer opportunities for more people with learning disabilities to experience fun, fitness and friendship through sport.
I have been an Ambassador for Special Olympics GB since 2008. “I really enjoy being an ambassador for such an inspiring organisation. The athlete's motto is ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.’ This is just fantastic and is the spirit in which all sport should be played.”
I have joined the Board of Special Olympics GB in 2009 and in December 2010 was unanimously appointed as Chairman. "My vision is to take the organisation forward from not only being a respected charity and GB’s largest provider of sports training to people with a learning disability, but to be recognised as one of the nation’s premier charities so that our athletes, volunteers and the organisation may reap the benefits that increased profile, support and funding will bring… and so that we can offer opportunity, support and achievement to many more people with a learning disability in GB."
