Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and (in advance) for your kind support and generous donation!
I have been supporting the Christian charity, Samaritan's Purse, for many years and believe their work in the developing world is so encouraging and transforming of people's lives that I am compelled to do my bit to make sure it continues. To find out more, please see: http://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/who-we-are
Specifically, I found out about a project called WaSH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) which assists communities in many African countries with the most basic of human needs; water. No-one can survive without water and yet (approximately) 1 in every 8 people in the world still do not have access to clean, safe water. Samaritan’s Purse are committed to doing something about that and I share that passion and want to help in any way that I can.
I am travelling to Liberia with a team sent by Samaritan's Purse in September and will assist first hand with the production and installation of a water filters. The project enables members of the team to live and work alongside a local community in Liberia, the poorest country in Africa, building mud-huts for families in need and assisting with sanitation education and building drainage networks (in addition to general assistance, love and support to the community at large).
With the help of local churches and charities, Samaritan’s Purse have already ensured that thousands of families in places where the need was the greatest, have access to safe water and sanitation, while also providing love and compassion, a kind word and practical assistance and support to those that face the most difficult of situations. Since 2005, Samaritan’s Purse been able to provide over 220,000 people with access to clean water and sanitation across many countries including Ethiopia, Liberia, Niger, Mozambique and Uganda. They provide:
1. Clean water – to ensure families have access to clean water and have already installed over 4,000 water filters to do just that.
2. Sanitation – 2.6 billion people in the world (roughly 2 out of every 5) do not have proper drains or toilets. By providing communities with a latrine (a loo!), Samaritan’s Purse help improve hygiene and prevent the spread of disease.
3. Health and Hygiene Education - Samaritan’s Purse train local educators to teach people about how to look after themselves and their water safely. This includes ways of obtaining and storing safe water, how to dispose of waste, and the importance of hand-washing and hygienic food handling.
The lives of so many people have been transformed by the simple gift of water or sanitation - you can read some of their stories here http://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/water-and-sanitation-stories.
Please get involved! You can change the life of a community in Africa by giving them the gift of water through a water filter. £50 will pay for the production and installation of a water filter in a family home, providing a pernament and sustainable source of clean, safe water for a whole family. All contributions make a difference and add to the number of filters that can be installed during my time working with Samaritan’s Purse in Liberia.
