ICYE-UK sends volunteers to live and work in communities worldwide where they learn new skills and make a real difference to peoples' lives. It aims to promote peace and cultural understanding through the exchange of people and skills.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

I will be going to Honduras in August 2014 to volunteer for 12 months with ICYE. I will be working within the "Los Angeles" programme, a centre for children and young people with disabilities.  I will be living with either a host family or within the voluntary project.  I need to raise 4605 for the charity which enables them to support volunteers in overseas countries and also volunteers coming to volunteer in the UK.

 Honduras

Honduras is located in the heat of central America. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. It suffers from a highly unequal income distribution and high levels of unemployment. 60% of the population live below the poverty line. It's estimated more than 1/4 of children suffer from stunted growth due to poor nutrition. In 1998 Honduras was affected badly by Hurricane Mitch, killing at least 7000 people and having a devastating affect on peoples livelihoods. The official language is Spanish.

Why ICYE?

Volunteering overseas is something I never thought I would be able to do due to the cost. In 2011 I volunteered in Namibia for 3 months on a government funded scheme and since coming back have wanted to go overseas for a longer period of time. Having researched around ICYE was the most appropriate organisation to go with. It ensures volunteers are fully trained before they go overseas. Volunteers also have an induction and language lessons once in-country. There is also a mid term and end of project evaluation to help volunteers reflect on their experiences and learning. ICYE is based all around the world and the UK hosts volunteers from overseas in social projects, so know when you donate you are not only supporting me to go overseas you are also supporting someone to come to the UK.

Fundraising Activities

To start off my fundraising I took part in the 'Live below the Line' challenge where I lived off

£1 a day for ten days from 2nd December. I had
10 to spend on food to last me 10 days. £240 was raised in sponsorship from this.I have also held a cake sale and several table top sales. I have had 2 street collections in May where I had the Honduran flag painted on my cheek.

Please support me by donating as much as you can and if you're lucky enough to earn enough to pay tax then please, please remember to add gift aid as it all goes towards my fundraising target with no extra cost to you. How amazing is that?! Thanks in advance, Naomi x
