UPDATE - I made it to Uhuru peak of Kilimanjaro onthe 20th of August. Thanks for the support of those who have donated and those to donate in the future. We also provided Basic Psychotherapy Training and visited some of Self help groups and projects run by basic needs and where the money you dontate will go. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL THE MONEY RAISED GOES STRAIGHT TO THE CHARITY AS THE CLIMB WAS SELF FUNDED. Thanks xx

The time has come for a new adventure and in this case the adventure is in the shape of the roof top of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro!! Tess and I are climbing Kilimanjaro in August 2010. Those who know me will realise this is a massive challange as I love my car and walking never mind climbing a mountain is the last thing I imagined doing.

I ask that you can donate anything that you can, every little helps. The money that I raise will be going to BasicNeeds. Basic Needs is a international development charity aiming to bring about changes to the lives of mentally ill people around the world.

Mental health is a topic close to my heart as professionally and personally I have seen the devestating effects bad mental health can have on individuals, families and friends and the amazing strength good mental health can provide.  As we are in Tanzania I wanted to support a charity that is based within the community and whom supports the development of training and access to mental health support in rural communities in Tanzania.

BasicNeeds started its operations in Tanzania in 2004 with the motivation to enable people with mental disorders to live and work successful in their communities. The need to bridge the gap between mental health and development intervention led BasicNeeds to initiate a mental health and development model for better access to treatment and active participation of people with mental illness leading to social integration.

 

The model takes in a developmental process commencing with a process of consultation at community level, moving on to working alongside mentally ill and epileptic people in seeking to access effective treatment and a sustainable livelihood.The money donated to this charity will go straight to the projects based in Dar es Salam and Mtwara. I hope to visit and offer my support and experience to the projects while I am in Tanzania
