Hi Guys,
I have decided to take on my biggest challenge yet and raise money for an important charity at the same time. I am going to hike / climb up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, setting off on the 25th February 2012.
The trek will involve 6-7 days hiking and camping to reach the highest peak at 5,895m (over 19,000 ft). Day 5 we will set off at midnight and walk through the night to reach the highest point - walking for 11-15 hours on this day in order to get back to a safe altitude to sleep at 3,720m! Climate temperatures can vary from -25C to 30C.
The personal challenge here is that I have never been particularly fit (I have a year to work on that!), I can’t remember the last time I slept in a tent (being a light sleeper means I may not get much sleep!), personal hygiene is very important to me (washing my hands and applying hand cream 20 times a day will not be possible) and I get dizzy walking up the stairs… so I have a long way to go before striding my way up the highest mountain in Africa and tallest free standing mountain in the world!!!
Who am I raising money for:
I am raising money for The Adolescent and Children’s Trust (TACT), it is the UK’s largest charity and voluntary agency providing fostering and adoption services.
Over 60% of the looked after children and young people have suffered abuse or neglect before they came into care. Understandably these traumas stay with them for a long time and affect future relationships, educational outcomes and career prospects.
TACT supports children and young people during their time in care through offering a variety of extra support and services including:
• access to a Children’s Resource Worker
• the opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions through our Children’s Champion meetings
• the chance to attend young people events such as TACT’s BIG Weekend away where young people have the opportunity to meet other young people in care and challenge themselves in a variety of activities
• attending TACT’s Skills4Life course which aims to equip young people with the basic skills they need to live independently. They will learn skills related to money matters, social skills, health, the transition of becoming independent, employment and managing their home
• round the clock access to a designated social worker
• access to a Leaving Care Resource Worker who provides support to young people approaching leaving care age.
For further information, their website is: http://www.tactcare.org.uk/
Any contribution you can make, even £1, will really make a difference to helping me achieve my £4k goal!!
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
