In January 2010, I am joining a team attempting to summit in to raise money on behalf of the Anthony Nolan Trust. At 6962m, it is the second highest of the seven summits, the highest mountain in , and indeed in the Southern and Western Hemispheres.
The trip will take 25 days and is a mountaineering expedition, rather than a trek. The mountain is known for its savage weather and legendary storms. And with oxygen levels at the summit only 40% of that at sea level, the effects of altitude are not to be underestimated.
In the past I have taken part in the Everest Base and the Mera Peak Challenge on behalf of the Anthony Nolan Trust. This expedition will be the most arduous of all. The Ultimate Challenge!
I have pledged to raise £5,000 for the Trust. This includes the cost of my trip. I shall put £2500 into my fund to cover the cost of my trip, as I have done on previous occasions. Any donations kindly made by anyone else therefore, will all go directly to the charity; none will go to pay for my trip.
The Trust set up the world’s first register of potential bone marrow donors; ordinary people who are willing to donate some of their bone marrow to give the chance of life to someone in need. The Trust also carries out research to improve the success rate of all kinds of transplants. Their work is carried out without the benefit of government funding; they rely solely on charitable donations.
