My story

Here's some brief details about my journey by bicycle, with my son Tom, from Lands End to John O Groats.  14 days allowed, no real training, just went for it!

Day 1  Land's End - Callington 87.6m + a bit from Sennen Cove to Lands End which includes a mega climb.  Hardest day of all - too many miles - too many hills - bad planning on my part!

Day 2  Callington - Taunton 82.81m.  A30 dual carriageway - scary traffic but a bit easier. Tom flat tyre.

Day 3  Taunton - Chepstow 70.59m.  Avonmouth & Severn bridges.  Met Tom's girfriend for dinner (she's from Wales).

Day 4  Chepstow - Ludlow 61.07m.  Lovely scenery along the Wye Valley.  Top speed on whole of journey 40mph.  Met Laura for dinner - nearest point to Caldecott!

Day 5  Ludlow - Acton Bridge (Nr Warrington) 75.92m.  God bless the A49 (it's so flat!).  Best B&B EVER.

Day 6  Acton Bridge - Carnforth 71.20m.  My knee starts giving grief.  Lorry attemps to stop my journey.

Day 7  Carnforth - Carlisle 61.42m.  Big climb in bad weather - Tom grumpy - Shap delights with coffee shop serving hot soup & rolls.  Worst B&B EVER

Day 8  Carlisle - Crawford 60.31m.  Into Scotland!  Good quiet road. Stunning dinner at B&B

Day 9  Crawford - Arden 65.31m.  Bad weather start, slow progress initially.  No dinner!

Day 10  Arden - Kingshouse Hotel (Nr Glencoe) 53.72m.  Very scenic.  Met Scottish piper busking in layby!

Day 11  Kingshouse - Invermoriston 67m.  A82 possibly the most dangerous road we travelled.

Day 12  Invermoriston - Alness 49.54m.  Lovely ride alongside Loch Ness (no sightings).

Day 13  Alness - Helmsdale 49.24m.  Superb flat road for a good while.  Knee holding up.  Both of us saddle sore, every day!

Day 14  Helmsdale - John O Groats 53.10m.  Big climb out of Helmsdale.  Biggest climb and descent of whole trip at Berridale.  Who cares we're almost there!  Final mile or two freewheeling down into JOG.  908.76 miles.  Feels good!  Taxi back to Wick and lovely dinner.

12 hour train journey home next day.  Big welcome home and well done cake!
