When - Starting from Southport on 10th June and finishing at Hornsea on 13th - 210 miles!
About Me
Age - 49 at the last count - so that makes me pretty old for this team.
Fitness Level - Slightly above average for age….. apparently!
Cycling History - late teens and early 20’s : avid cyclist, touring holidays - youth hostelling etc - 50 miles a day no problem!
Now - reasonably active - a keen walker/hiker and very occasional cyclist. Recently been going to seed slightly - so eager to get fitter and this is the year to do it. I’m hopeful that training for the 55 miles a day Coast to Coast will not be too traumatic and will more pleasure than pain. Have just invested in some good padded shorts - never used to need them!
Why - Well this disease will probably have impacted everyone of my generation in some way – in my case my own mother in 1991 and only last week - a family friend. The one thing I find amazing is that we still operate with treatments which are so invasive and damaging in themselves. The good news is that the latest research looks at much more effective and targeted treatments, which are less damaging, trying to exploit the potential of gene therapies and cellular biology – here’s to the next generation of treatments.
Training - Well yes – I've been pacing myself against the team and completed 35 miles last weekend. Building up slowly! I don’t need to loose any weight I’m told, but I certainly do need to build up some stamina.
Diet – as long as there’s steak and chips on the menu at the hotel - I’ll be happy. By the way an old cycling trick - once told me by a veteran - is to stuff a good steak down your shorts in the morning and ride this on the saddle all day - it saves your own backside somewhat and its beautifully tender when you cook it that night! Moreish! Failing that- take some Vaseline and talcum powder – and someone to rub it in for you !
Keep Pedalling .....
