The Sheffield Poem-a-thon for Refugees and Asylum Seekers · 2 April 2016

ASSIST works with people in Sheffield who have been refused asylum in the UK. They are evicted from their Home Office accommodation and forced into destitution. We provide our clients with stable, dignified accommodation, regular financial support and a person-centred casework service.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Saturday April 2nd I'll be  taking part in a Poem-a-thon to raise money for Sheffield charity Assist. Assist  is a really important resource for people who often get no other help. They support people in our city who - because they are refused asylum seekers -  are not allowed to work, register themselves as homeless, or have access to local authority night shelters. Many become destitute, struggling daily with basic survival tasks such as finding food, clothing and shelter. Assist offer practical help such as legal advice and grants to obtain food. They also help people  feel a sense of belonging and connectedness with others - something all human beings need when they are far from home, enduring separations and the impact of trauma.

This free event will run from 10 till 6, at The Art House, 8 Backfields, off Division Street, Sheffield S1 4HU. 48 poets will be reading for 8 minutes each, in  a lovely venue with added stalls, refreshments and tombola! Additional money raised on the day will go to support work with refugees in Northern France.
