New Forest Half Marathon · 8 September 2005

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke. Story

On Sunday September 18th, Michelle and Ian Lever will be running what must surely be one of the most picturesque half marathon courses imaginable. Along with 2,000 others they will be setting off from New Milton for a 13 mile run through the beautiful New Forest. Michelle explains why they have chosen to support Smile4Rich.

"We recently featured as the 'Radio Solent Family' on Julian Clegg's Breakfast Show, which was great fun! It was on the breakfast show that we heard about 'Smile for Rich'. We were moved by the tragic story of Richard Bowler, especially as our boys are both heavily involved in football. Ian suggested that we run 'The New Forest half marathon' for 'Smile for Rich' and we hope to raise as much as possible for the appeal."

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Smile4Rich will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support. Keep Smiling!
