Aspire Channel Swim 2010 · 5 December 2010 ·

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

I'm in France! (well actually I'm at home on the sofa, the wrong side of a bottle of fizz). 12 swimming sessions, 22 miles, 21 hours, 1073 lengths.

Thank you so much to all who have sponsored me, I am truly grateful and appreciative. XXX

A POEM INSPIRED BY MY SWIM:

It was cold and dark and rainy,
I was cosy by the fire
but a promise is a promise
and mine was to Aspire
I've pledged to swim the channel,
... length by length by length
I've got 12 weeks to do it,
I'm building up my strength
My hair has gone all frizzy,
my skin's wrinkly as well..
.eau de chlorine has become
my signature smell
I'm well on track to do it,
over two thirds of the way
just 310 more lengths to go
and it'll be a happy day
I'll step out of the swimming pool,
do a celebratory dance
even though my knees are complaining,
because I'll have reached France
So I'll go out and do the swimming,
you stay home and watch TV
but please visit Just Giving
and go and sponsor me

ANOTHER UPDATE - I've just completed 106 lengths, totalling 200 lengths this week. I am nearly half way across that channel at 500 lengths.

UPDATE - I have now done three instalments of my channel swim - a 50 length, an 80 length and today an 82 length. I am now a good fifth of the way across the channel and could do with some sponsors to keep me motivated please!

In April 2010 I took part in the Swimathon and raised over £300 for Marie Curie Cancer Care by swimming 2.5km. That was amazing and the sense of achievement and pride in myself for doing it was surpassed only in my gratitude to family, friends, colleagues and random people I know on the internet for cheering me on, sponsoring me and celebrating with me when I'd finished.

So I'm calling on you again - family, friends, colleagues and random internet people hear my plea :).

Last time I managed my 2.5km in one go and vowed to do something bigger, better, faster or longer next time. I considered shark infested waters, the tropics complete with scuba-gear or journeying to the poles for a spot of battling icebergs but in the end a bigger challenge right here at home in the local pool seemed the way forward. Living on the south coast the English Channel is right here on my doorstep, infact I can see it from the local pool but I reckon 1073 lengths of it excuses me from the goosefat and goosepimples.

Any donation, no matter how small goes to another amazing good cause. It will spur me on on this much longer challenge and make what I'm doing worthwhile.
