In March 2006 my sister Vanessa Kyte and I did our 1st walk to raise money for the Forever Friends Appeal at The Royal United Hospital, Bath, where Ness was being treated for breast cancer after her diagnosis in 2000.



Ness sadly died in 2007 but asked me to promise I would carry on until a much needed new cancer centre was built at the RUH.



One of the many times she had been admitted into the William Budd ward she had been put into an isolation room that looked out on to a red brick wall and had a noisy air conditioning unit on the ceiling. She looked at me and said we need a new cancer centre! A centre were you feel safe and secure. When you are so frightened and fearing the unknown it will be like wrapping you in a warm secure blanket. As the staff have always done!



So this May it will be 10 years from the first walk and I am going to “Go with the Flo" with my little Jack Russel, by walking 100 miles around the RUH Catchment Area to raise money for the new Cancer Centre.



Flo is a very special dog. She was one of a litter of pups all named after characters from Gavin and Stacy. She was called Nessa and the pups were all due to leave their mum on what would have been my sister Nessa's 50th birthday. So it was a no brainer - Flo became part of our family and my walking partner.



Flo and I would like to ask you to sponsor us over our 100 mile walk. We will be walking between 9th and 14th May and the route goes between the four RUH Community Fundraising Groups based in Chippenham, Larkhall Bath, Midsomer Norton and Warminster; then finishing on our beautiful canal walk, The Walk of Life, from Devizes to Bath. The last 10 years of walks are my sister’s legacy, and to date £255,000 has been raised by so many fantastic walkers and sponsors.



No amount of walking or fundraising can take away the pain of losing someone so beautiful and brave. But her understanding of how this state of the art unit could help the staff, patients and community drives me to keep my last promise to Ness.
