ODA are experts at development projects in the developing world, they give local communities what they want, and no money whatsoever is spent on any student’s expenses.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; color: blue;">Oxford</span><span style="font-family: Calibri; color: blue;"> development abroad (ODA) is a student run charity which works with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local communities to help with small scale development projects in the developing world. This summer I will be working with them in Nepal. ODA works in association with an NGO called Partnership for Sustainable Development" (PSD). Four groups from Oxford will be sent out to assist in several rural communities. The placement will last for 5 weeks, after four days of intensive training in Kathmandu. Training includes multiple development workshops, as well as health and cultural lessons and a Nepalese language course. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; color: blue;">I will be based in the village of Bhakunde, in the Baglung district of central Nepal. Living with a local family, I will be working alongside local workers, offering unskilled work to assist in construction, and to ensure that the building work progresses at the desired pace. I will also have an opportunity to teach in local schools, on subjects such as health and sanitation. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; color: blue;">Projects are funded by two sources: ODA and the communities. This means that the communities have a great incentive in choosing projects they need. The £700 I raise will be put straight to work in local development projects like the one in Bhakunde, and will NOT be used to pay for the expenses of any of the students or for flights. </span></p>
