What are we doing?
Come mid-August I and Ed Latham (a friend from school) shall be pedalling our way from to John O'Groats over an ambitious target of 10 days in order to raise money for charity. Whilst Ed has chosen "Help for Heroes" as his charity of choice, I am aiming to raise as much money as possible for "Brain Tumour ".
Why Brain Tumour ?I decided to raise money for this charity following the news a few months ago that a close friend from school, John Vanns, had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour upon returning home from a ski season. The news came as a huge shock to everyone and the support John has received so far from all his friends and family has been magnificent. The huge numbers of visitors John has received has only gone to show quite how popular a guy he is.
For those of you who do know John, I am sure you would agree that were he able to participate in such an event, he'd be keen to do it as quick as humanly possible.... whilst also wanting to hit the pub pretty much every night! We have, therefore, decided to make this ride a real physical challenge, aiming to ride at least 100 miles a day and thus to complete the 1000 mile ride in under 10 days. Whilst this represents a big challenge (especially considering our training has thus far been minimal), we will be showing just a fraction of the determination and spirit that John has shown so far in his fight against his illness.
Where will your money be going?
Founded in 1997, Brain Tumour provides crucial practical and emotional support to brain tumour patients and their families. The charity aims to increase awareness and knowledge of brain tumours and research into the disease, improve access to information and support, and enhance treatment and care, and to raise money to fund an extensive programme of research, education and support.
Currently, research is grossly under funded and support for those affected is fragmented and inadequate. I hope you will all be able to spare some money (even the smallest amount) during these economically tough times to help Brain Tumour to expand its important work.
