My story
Home safe and sound... Lundy to Woolacombe, over twenty miles in six and a half hours! Incredible! Take a look at photos and film of the day here...
UPDATE (7pm TUES 7th) Great news! It's back on for this Thursday... the forecast's looking half decent, the support boats are ready and Nick's going to make an attempt on the first ever solo Lundy to Woolacombe swim. With a bit of luck, a fair wind, and a huge amount of swimming effort, 48 hours from now Nick will be arriving on Woolacombe Beach. Be there to welcome him home (7pm – 8pm Thurs) and join everyone at the Red Barn after for a fundraising part to celebrate!
UPDATE: On advice of the support boat skipper and in light of the poor conditions forecast for Thursday, Nick’s swim from Lundy has been postponed. He’s hoping to do it at the next possible opportunity, on Thursday 7 October. Watch this space! Keep donating! And pass it on...!
To raise money for Children's Hospice South West, on 9th September 2010 Nick Thorn will be making the first ever solo attempt to swim from Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel to Woolacombe Beach.
Nick is hoping to complete the whopping 19.8 miles of this beach-to-beach swim (about the same as the Cross Channel Swim) in just 6 to 8 hours.
A team of four swimmers successfully completed a relay Lundy Swim last summer. The only other known similar swim attempt was from Hartland Point to Lundy in the 1950s by an Egyptian army captain.
It takes a huge support team to help out with a challenge like this and thanks go to those that have offered their time and help:
* Support vessels, from Ilfracome Yacht Club and Geoff Huelin of Mortehoe Shellfish
* Dave Vince and Dave Jenkins, who have offered their time organising and helping as swim witnesses
* Bruce Hughes, who completed the relay last year and has been the doctor advising on the swim
* Keith Gammon, swim paramedic and board paddler on the day
* Steve Newton, organiser of nutrition/hydration and board paddler on the day
