In 2012, I am taking on the biggest challenge of my life - it’s called the 12in12. 12 months, 12 challenges, one mission - to raise £250,000 for HOPEHIV. This is a charity that supports children and young people in sub-Saharan Africa who have been orphaned or affected by HIV/Aids.

Each and every one of my self-funded challenges will test me beyond belief, physically and mentally for sure, but there are a few that simply petrify me. But ultimately it’s about using who I am to make a real difference to the children and communities of sub-Saharan Africa.

My year ahead...

Never before have I run a half, nor a full, marathon; in 2012 I’ll be taking on two half marathons, Brighton and Reading, and making my debut at the Edinburgh Marathon. In the summer I’ll be racing against the clock to climb the 3 highest mountains in the UK (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in just 24 hours to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge. London to Brighton bike ride, a 12 hour bounceathon, a terrifying open water swim and my first ever sprint triathlon also feature in my challenge calendar...and that’s just a taster of the year to come! The closing month, December 2012, will see Team 12 travel, self-funded, to South Africa to witness for ourselves the street kids projects, the slums, schools and townships. We’ll surf and play football with the street kids and then take on a 3,558 ft climb of Table Mountain in Cape Town!

Team 12 is made up of 26 members and we have set a target of £250,000 – a huge amount for a team of enthusiastic but amateur fundraisers. However we are determined to hit this figure as we know that every penny we raise will be making its way to Africa to support incredible projects.

For each of our challenges we are also looking to recruit as many fellow adventurers as possible, all fundraising for our cause.

2012 is the year that the Olympic Games come to London; but it’s also my Olympic year. Thank you for taking the time to read about the12in12 and I promise to keep you posted on my fundraising progress throughout the year.
