My friend Karen has cancer. She is the most amazing person I know. She doesn't shout or cry or even curse. Kaz channels all of her strength into helping others. Every single day she spends her evenings online counselling women who have the same illness, men who fear the illness and men and women who have lost loved ones to this illness. Kaz has watched her friends lose their battle against cancer, she's watched her friends win their battle against cancer but every day she lives with cancer.

Last year Karen decided she wanted to climb Snowdon. The climb to the summit was in memory of all of the women lost to breast cancer and also to inspire those women who were suffering with this disease. The aim to raise money for Macmillan, who had been so helpful to Karen during her illness. 

Shortly before the climb Karen discovered that one of her lungs had collapsed due to constant Radiation treatments - she was quite poorly. Not once did this woman even contemplate not climbing. Against everyone's advice Karen stepped onto the mountain in the pouring rain at 10am on Saturday 3rd September 2011, and i was beside her.

Five hours later and only 20 minutes from summit, climbers were turning back as pathways turned into streams and mud began to slide from the mount. Karen turned to me, soaking wet and wheezing as her one lung stuggled under the pace of her breathing and she cried....

She cried all the way down the mountain. Karen believed she had  broken her promise to all that had sponsored us. That when we made each other a promise - 'We'll do it again, we will reach the top and we'll do it soon.' 

Karen can't climb anymore, so we her friends (54 of us) are climbing for her. Most of these women are sufferers, some are survivours to me......all of them are winners!
